Over 500 people were injured when a flammable powder exploded mid-air at a party on Saturday night at the Formosa Fun Coast water park in New Taipei City, Taiwan.

According to Wang Wei-sheng, a liaison with city's fire department, the accidental explosion of a colored theatrical powder set off a fire near the stage in front of about 1,000 spectators during a "Color Play Asia" party.

Witnesses said the fire spread quickly after the powder was blown into the air.

Taiwan's Central News Agency reported that the fire was quickly brought under control.

As of 11am on Sunday, 516 burn injuries have been reported, 8 of which are life-threatening.

Taiwan Premier Mao Chih-kuo announced Sunday a ban on parties that use flammable colored powder.
